        Marble Souvenirs

        Marble

A marble quarry - Carrara The most famous marble in the world is to be found in the mountains surrounding Carrara. Vast white spots blot the mountain peaks and, during the winter, can easily be mistaken for snow.

        Marble and its traditions:
Since the introduction of heavy vehicle by the car industry, lorries have been used to transport marble down the mountainside to the port in Marina di Carrara. From Roman Times upto 30 years ago, a process called lizzatura was practised.

The sculpture workshops take in world famous artists and carry out their works of art.

The use of marble is found in many aspects of local people's lives; for example, marble vessels are used to preserve food, in particular, the renowned "lardo" (lard) from Colonnata!
